What to wear on an autumn trip to Switzerland: Outfits tailored for mountains and cities

Is it already cold in Switzerland in the autumn, or can you still get by in short sleeves?

This summer was really hot. It rained for the first time in a while yesterday, but according to the forecast I saw, sunny days are likely to continue for about the next two weeks. We can probably still enjoy the blue skies for a while.

However, even though the daytime sun is warm, the morning and evening air has gradually turned to autumn. Today, based on my recent experiences living in Switzerland, I would like to introduce the clothing you will want to bring for an autumn trip.

In the vineyard, it's fleece in the morning and summer-like warmth by midday.

Last Sunday, I helped with the grape harvest, known as "vendanges," in my friend's vineyard in Yvorne.

Early in the morning, the vineyard is still in shadow. In the valley surrounded by mountains, even when the sun comes up, it takes time for its light to reach it.

The temperature was around 10°C, and I started working in the morning wearing a fleece jacket. However, during the day, the temperature rose to about 24 to 26°C. Even on the same day, it was much warmer than in the morning.

And around 7 PM, as the sun went down, it got chilly again. It was a day that made me realize how much difference the presence of sunlight makes to how you actually feel the temperature.

The basic rule for autumn clothing is being able to take it off and put it on.

During this time of year, wearing just one thick jacket may make you feel too hot during the day. It’s helpful to layer lightweight clothes so you can adjust your outfit based on the temperature and sunlight.

For example, here are some combinations:

  • For the layer closest to your skin, short sleeves or thin long sleeves.
  • fleece or cardigan to wear in the morning and evening
  • A lightweight jacket to protect against wind and rain

Even if it's cool when you leave, it's a good idea to leave a little extra space in your bag so you can take off your jacket during the day—it makes things easier.

On days when you're out walking around town, don't forget to bring a light jacket.

Even when walking around town, the temperature you feel changes between sunny spots and shade, and between day and night.

If you are dressing for a warm afternoon, bring something to put on for the evening and onwards. A lightweight stole is also useful for days when you might dine on an outdoor terrace or return home late.

When it comes to shoes, we recommend wearing a pair you're used to, as they'll help you avoid getting tired even after walking for long periods while sightseeing.

On the day you go to the mountains, do not judge by the warmth of the city alone.

The temperature on a day spent in the vineyards reflects only that specific location and that particular day. When heading out to the mountains, I adjust my preparations based on the elevation and weather conditions at my destination.

Even on days when you take a mountain train or cable car up to enjoy the scenery, you’ll want to bring along warm clothing and a windproof jacket in addition to your regular street clothes.

When going on a hike, keep in mind that you’ll be sweating and stopping to rest. Wear clothes that are easy to put on and take off, and be sure to bring rain gear and shoes suitable for the trail.

It can be folded into the inner pocket so it becomes compact when not in use, which is also a plus.

Things to Check Before Packing

  • Weather and Temperature in the City Where You're Staying and the Mountain You're Visiting
  • Days when you leave early in the morning or plan to be out until late at night
  • Lightweight clothes that are easy to put on and take off, and a fleece
  • A jacket that can withstand wind and rain
  • Worn-in shoes, a sunny day's hat or sunglasses

Autumn in Switzerland is a season where you can enjoy the warm sunshine while feeling the changing of the seasons in the morning and evening.

Instead of deciding whether it's "cold or hot," try going out in clothes that can adapt to the day's changing weather.
